QuestionAnswer
Wilmot Proviso A bill proposed to outlaw slavery in any territory the United States might acquire from the War with Mexico.
Free-Soil Party A political party dedicated to stopping the expansion of slavery.
Henry Clay A senator of Kentucky who helped create the Missouri Compromise in 1820 as well as created a plan (the Compromise of 1850) to settle the California problem.
Daniel Webster A senator from Massachusetts who supported the Compromise of 1850 for the sake of the Union.
Stephen A. Douglas A senator of Illinois who allowed the Compromise of 1850 become law.
Compromise of 1850 The plan created by Senator Henry Clay to settle the differences in views between the North and the South on how California should be accepted as a state.
Harriet Beecher Stowe A woman who was outraged when she heard about the part of the Compromise of 1850 that would help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves.
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" A novel that portrayed slavery as brutal and immoral. It was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
Fugitive Slave Act The 1850 law that helped slave holders recapture runaway slaves.
Popular Sovereignty A system where the residents vote to decide an issue.
Kansas-Nebraska Act An 1854 law that established the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and gave their residents the right to decide whether to allow slavery.
John Brown An extreme abolitionist who avenged the Sack of Lawrence by murdering five pro-slavery neighbors with the help of seven other men.
Republican Party The political party formed in 1854 by opponents of slavery in the territories.
John C. Frémont Nominated by the Republicans to be a strong presidential candidate in 1856 to strengthen their young party was...
James Buchanan The Democrats nominated this man to run for presidency in 1856
Dred Scott V.S. Sandford An 1856 Supreme court case in which a slave, Dred Scott, sued for his freedom because he had been taken to live in territories where slavery was illegal; the Court ruled against Scott.
Roger B. Taney A Chief Justice who said that Dred Scott was not a U.S. citizen and so as a result, he could not sue in U.S. courts.
Abraham Lincoln Nominated by Illinois Republicans, he challenged Douglas for his U.S. senate seat.
Harpers Ferry A federal arsenal in Virginia that was captured in 1859 during a slave revolt.
Platform A statement of beliefs.
Secede To formally withdraw.
Confederate States of America The Confederation formed in 1861 by the Southern States after their secession from the Union.
Jefferson Davis President of the Confederacy.
Crittenden Plan A compromise introduced in 1861 that might have prevented secession.
