progressive- people who believe in the reform and improvement of society
referendum- a law passed by a state legislature that is voted on by voters
muckrakers- journalists who wrote about wrongdoings in business and government
recall- the removal of an elected official from office between regular elections
direct primary- a primary election in which citizens vote directly for a candidate
prohibition- the legal ban on alcohol
initiative- an issue placed on the ballot to be voted on in the next election
square deal- an agreement that is fair to both sides
conservation- efforts to save the environment
bully pulpit- a prominent public position from which a politician is able to present views
assimilation- the absorption of one cultural group into a larger group
anti-Semitism- discrimination against Jews
suffragist- one who tries to gain the right to vote
barrios- poor sections of cities inhabited by Mexican immigrants
civil rights- those rights guaranteed to citizens by the fact that they are citizens
