Colonial Settlement

Flash Cards for Mr. Mattia's Colonial settlement unit.

TermDefinition
Joint Stock Company A business in which investors pool their wealth in order to turn a profit.
Royal Colony An official colony of England which is led by a Royal Governor.
Subsistence Farming farming to produce enough food for your family, with a bit left over to trade.
Sea Economy An economy centered on the sea and sea ports. People make money from things like fishing, whaling, shipping, boat-building, etc. This mostly existed in New England.
Triangular Trade A trans-atlantic system of trade where goods, including slaves, were exchanged between Africa, England, Europe, the West Indies, and the colonies in North America.
Navigation Acts The series of laws, passed by England's Parliament, to ensure that England made money from its colonies.
Smuggling To illegally import or export goods.
Cash Crops A crop grown by a farmer to be sold for money instead of personal use.
Gristmill A mill in which grain is ground to produce flour or meal.
Plantation A large, self-sufficient farm that produces cash crops.
Growing Season The time of year, in a region, when crops grow best.
John Smith One of the leaders of Jamestown who had to institute harsh discipline so that they could survive.
Pilgrims A member of the Separatists who rejected the Church of England, sailed to America, and founded the Plymouth colony in 1620.
Puritans People from England that settled the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, and sought to reform the practices of the Church of England.
Separatists People who wanted to completely separate themselves from the Church of England, yet remain Christian. (Pilgrims)
Roger Williams Founder of Rhode Island. Got in trouble with the Puritans for believing that you shouldn't force people to go to church and that you should treat the Natives right.
Anne Hutchinson Female preacher who fled to Rhode Island after being persecuted by the Puritans. She didn't think official clergy or preachers were necessary to know God.
William Penn He was a Quaker and the founder of Pennsylvania. Penn was owed money by King Charles II, and was granted the land for Pennsylvania instead.
Quakers A religious group who believed that all people should live in peace and harmony. They believed in the "inner light" instead of church authority and structure. Also believed in treating the natives right and not fighting.
Artisans A skilled worker, such as a shoe-maker or a blacksmith, who makes goods by hand; a craftsperson.
Scots-Irish Groups of people from Scotland and Ireland who settled much of the back-country of colonial America.
Clans A large group of families that claim a common ancestor. In America, these are usually Scotch or Irish people.
House of Burgesses Created in Jamestown, Virginia in 1617. This was the forst representative assembly government in the American Colonies.
Royal Governor A person who was appointed by the King to rule a Royal Colony.
Rights of Englishmen The rights and freedoms that all Englishmen expected to be given to them, even in the New World. These included the right to representative self-government, to a trial by jury, and to have a say in their taxes.
Mayflower Compact An agreement established by the Pilgrims who sailed to America on the Mayflower. -called for laws for the good of the colony. -set forth the idea of self-government in the colonies.
Bacon's Rebellion A rebellion against the rich people of Jamestown by Nathaniel Bacon and a group of land-less frontier settlers. -Bacon wanted a war with the local Natives to win more land. -The Jamestown governor said "NO". -Bacon and his group burned Jamestown.
Great Migration The movement of Puritans from England to establish settlements around the world. -20,000 came to America because the Puritans were so successful here.
King Phillip's War A war between New-England Puritans and Native Americans in 1675-1676.
Salem Witch Trials A series of trials in New England where more than 100 people were accused of being witches.
New England Colonies The colonies of: -Massachusetts -New Hampshire -Connecticut -Rhode Island
Middle Colonies The Colonies of: -New York -New Jersey -Pennsylvania -Delaware
Southern Colonies The colonies of: -Maryland -Virginia -North Carolina -South Carolina -Georgia
Back-Country The Land on the west side of the Appalacian Mountains. Settled in the colonial period by a lot of Scots-Irish people.
