Jarvis Pain Assess

Question | Answer |

Cutaneous Pain | Pain originating from the skin surface or subcutaneous structures. Often defined as sharp burning sensation. |
Deep Somatic Pain | Pain from vessels, joints, tendons, bone or muscles. May results from trauma, pressure or ischemia |
Visceral Pain | Originates in large interior organs such as kidneys, stomach, intestines, gallbladder or pancreas |
Non Verbal behavior with acute pain | Guarding, grimacing, vocalization, agitation or restlessness |
Non Verbal behavior with chronic pain | May give little indication, often under diagnosed. May sigh, rub, brace site. |
Questions for initial pain assessment | Where is your pain? When did it start? What does it feel like (burning, stabbing, etc)? How much pain do you have now? What makes it better or worse? How does it affect your ADL? How do you act when you are in pain? What does this pain mean to you? |
Transduction | The first phase of nociception where the painful stimulus is changed into an action potential |
Transmission | Second phase of nociception where the pain impulse moves away from the spinal cord to the brain |
Referred pain | pain that originates in one location but is felt in another |
Modulation | Last phase of nociception pain message is inhibited |
Neuropathic Pain | Abnormal processing of pain message, is burning and shooting in nature |
Nociceptors | specialized nerve endings that detect painful sensations |
