broad, creative, and flexible crisis intervention
maturational or developmental arise from situations that occur in conjunction with maturity
arise from external source, usually unanticipated situational
adventitious crisis unplanned, crisis of disaster
a sudden event in one's life which disturbs homeostatsis, during which one's usual coping skills are compromised crisis
crisis is self limiting and resolved in 4-6 weeks
types of crisis, phases of crisis, and aspects of crisis that have relevance for nurses 3 areas of ciris theory enables application of the nursing process
3 basic types of crisis situation maturational, situational, and adventitious
Phase One the individual is exposed to a precitpitating stressor (Anxiety increases, Previous coping skills are used)
Phase Two Previous coping skill have not worked and do not relieve the stress; anxiety increases
Phase Two Discomfort increases, feelings of helplessness occur because coping skills used fail, Confusion and disorganization
Phase Three all possible resources are activated to solve the problem and ease the discomfort
anxiety may escalate to severe and panic levels, fight or flight kicks in Phase Three
new pperspectives are sought. May attempt to overlook certain aspects to come to resolution. Phase Three
New coping skill may be attempted. If effective -- rsolution will occur Phase Three
Phase Four Tension mounts, burden increases to a braking point
Anxiety may overwhelm person. Cognitive functions are disorganized Phase Four
Phase Four Emotions are labile. Behavior may be disorganized. May become suicidal or violent against others
Emotional resolution of the immediate crisis. Client safety Goals of Crisis Intervention
Anxiety Reduction. Restoration to precrisis period or higher Goals of Crisis Intervention

What phase an individual maybe sucidal or violent against others? Phase Four
The nurse assesses three main areas after determining whether there is a need for external controls because of suicial or homicidal ideation or gestures are? 1) the client's perception of the preciptitating event, 2) the client's situationalsupports, and 3)the client's personal coping skill
Goals of crisis interventions Emotional resolution of the immediate crisis; Client Safety
Anxiety Reduction; Restoration to precrisis period or higher Goals of Crisis Interventions
Overwhelmed, depressed, states that has nothing in life worthwhile, self-hate and feelings of being ineffectual are assessed Risk for self-directed violence; Chronic low self-esteem; Spiritual distress; Hopelessness; Powerlessness
Confused, highly anxious, incoherent, crying or sobbing, shows extreme emotional pain Anxiety (moderate, severe, panic); Acute confusion; Distrubed thought processes ; Sleep deprivation
Has difficulty with interpersonal relationships, isolated, has few or no social supports Social isolation; Risk for loneliness; Impaired social interaction
Unable to function at work, school, and/or home at previous level, has difficulty concentrating or completting simple tasks Ineffective coping; Interrupted family processes; Caregiver role strain
Has experienced traumatic, emotionally overwhelming event or loss; unable to work through overwhelmingloss or event Risk for psottrauma syndrome; Rape-trauma syndrome; Dysfunctional grieving; Chronic sorrow
The two basic inital goals of crisis intervention which considered to be a function of the basic level of nursing are? Client safety and Anxiety reduction
Counseling Strategies Primary Care, Secondary Care, Tertiary Care
Primary care Promotes mental health and reduces mental illness to decrease the incidence of crisis
Work with client, Teach coping skills, assist client to make life changes Primary Care
Secondary Care Establishes intervention during an acute crisis to prevent prolonged anxiety from diminishing personal effectiveness and personality organization
Provide safety, assess problem, support systems and coping styles Secondary Care
Tertiary Care Provides support forthose recovering from a disabling mental state secondary to a severe crisis
Rehabilitation centers, shelters, community centers Tertiary Care
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing CISD
