Culture Way of Life
Cultural Element/Universal One of the eight key parts of a culture. Needed for the culture to survive
Ethnocentrism Thinking your culture is superior to other cultures
Diversity A wide variety of cultures present in one setting
Assimilation Process by which a person becomes a member of a culture
Cultural Diffusion The spreading and intermixing of cultures
Melting Pot Theory Different cultures combine to form a new culture with traits from all the original cultures
Salad Bowl Theory As new cultures mix together, they maintain their own individual identities
Technology The use of science and math to solve a problem
Civilization The aggregate culture of a group of people
Cultural Region An area where people share a common way of life
Clan An extended family all tracing their roots back to a common ancestor
Tribe A group of clans that unify into a larger group but all trace their roots back to a common ancestor
Matrilineal Lineage is traced back through the mother
Nomad A member of a people or tribe that has no permanent home. Rather, they move from place to place, according to the seasons, in order to find food and water
Hodenashonee/Iroquois "People of the Longhouse". Native American tribe that lived in New York State
Three Sisters Corn, Beans, Squash; the basic foods of the Iroquois
Confederacy League of independent states or nations
League of the Five Nations The collective name of the Iroquois after they formed their confderacy
