Muscle Relaxants

QuestionAnswer
Methocarbamol (Robaxin) Central acting skeletal muscle relaxant.Uses: adjunct for relief of spasm and pain in MS conditions such as Tetanus. SE: seizures, bradycardia, nausea, brown/green urine, hemolysis, elevated hemaglobin, rash, anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema.
Methocarbamol Teaching: pt should taper to avoid SE, green/brown urine, no ETOH, fall risk secondary to dizziness, drowsy, avoid OTC cough, antihistamines
Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) Skeletal muscle relaxant, central acting adjunct relief of muscle spasm and pain in MS conditions. Fibromyalgia(off label.SE: dizziness, drowsiness,dysrhythmias, nausea/emesis,urinary retention, rash. Assess pain, allergies,severe weakness in ext., do not crush, break, or chew ext release tab
Cyclobenzaprine Teaching should be tapered over a week,no etoh,avoid activity hazardous, avoid OTC cough, antihistamines, use gum or frequent sips of water for dry mouth
Diazepam(Valium)- Antianxiety, anticonvulsant, skeletal muscle relaxant, central acting adjunct skeletal muscle relaxant, rectally for acute seizure ppx.SE:dizziness,drowsiness,ECG changes,tachy, neutropenia, rash respiratory depression, crosses blood-brain barrier
Diazepam Teaching Assess:Orthostatic BP, P, RR, degree of anxiety, mental status, physical dependency Give with milk or food, may crush, gum for dry mouth, reduce opioid by 1/3, fall risk, not to be used for anxiety more than 4mos, habit forming, avoid OTC, avoid driving
Dantrolene sodium (Dantrium) Skeletal muscle relaxant, direct acting Uses: spasticity in MS, CVA, SPI,CP,malignant hyperthermia. SE:dizziness, seizures, low BP, hepatic injury, n/v, urinary frequency, cbc changes,rash,photosensitivity, Black Box Warning, do not crush or chew, with meals, fall risk, eval response
Dantrolene sodium Teaching Assess ECG, I&O,hepatic fxn,severe weakness, tolerance, taper,dc after 6wks,avoid driving,avoid otc/etoh, use sunscreen
Baclofen (Lioresal) Skeletal muscle relaxant, central acting uses: spasticity in spinal cord injury, MS,unlabeled:neuropathic pain, trigeminal neuralgia. SE: dizziness,seizures,cns depression,hypotension, n/v, dyspnea, assess BP, wt,blood glucose, decreases seizure threshold,I&O,allergic rxn,severe weakness,toler
Baclofen (Lioresal) Teaching taper,no etoh,avoid hazards,avoid OTC, notify provider if nausea, h/a,tinnitus,insomnia,confusion,painful urination, may require 1-2 months for response
