| Question | Answer |
| CONCENTRATION GRADIENT | The difference in the concentration of a substance across a distance. |
| EQUILIBRIUM? | The state in which the distribution of a substance is even throughout a region. |
| DIFFUSION | The movement of any substance from a region where its concentration is higher to a region where its concentration is lower. |
| OSMOSIS | The movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. |
| SELECTIVE PERMEABILITY | Certain substances can pass through the cell membrane. Some substances cannot get through. |
| PHOSPHOLIPID | A substance macromolecule of a phosphate group and two fatty acids. |
| CARRIER PROTEIN | Transports specific substances across a cell membrane. |
| SODIUM-POTASSIUM PUMP | A type of carrier protein that uses active transport to take sodium ions out of the cell and bring potassium ions into the cell. |
| LIPID BILAYER | A double layer of phospholipids that is the foundation of a biological membrane |
| PASSIVE TRANSPORT | The movement of materials across the cell membrane that does not require energy on the part of the cell. |
| ACTIVE TRANSPORT | The movement of materials across the cell membrane that requires energy on the part of the cell. |
| VESICLE | A type of organelle that transports packaged materials into or out of the cell. |
| ENDOCYTOSIS | Moves substances into the cell using the cell membrane to create a vesicle. |
| EXOCYTOSIS | Moves substances out of the cell by connecting a vesicle with the cell membrane and releasing the contents to the environment. |
| HYPERTONIC SOLUTION | Water diffuses out of the cell and and the cell shrinks. |
| HYPOTONIC SOLUTION | Water diffuses into the cell and the cell swells. |
| ISOTONIC SOLUTION | Water diffuses equally into and out of the cell- maintaining equilibrium. |
| HOMEOSTASIS | The cell maintains balanced using chemistry and temperature |
