| Adaptive Immunity | Acquired ability to recognize and destroy and individual pathogen. |
| Antibody | Soluble protein, produced by B cells, that interacts with antigen (aka immunoglobin) |
| Antigen | Molecule capable of interacting with specific components of the immmune system |
| Epitope (Antigen determinant) | Portion of an antigen that is reactive with a specific antibody or T-Cell receptor |
| Antigen-presenting cell (APC) | A macrophage, dendritic cell, or B cell that presents processed antigen peptides to a T cell |
| Autoantibody | an antibody that reacts to self antigens |
| B cell | A lymphocyte that has immunoglobulin surface receptors, produces immunoglobulin, and may present antigens to T cells |
| Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) | immunity resulting from direct interaction with antigen specific T cells |
| Cytokine | a soluble immune response modulator produced by leukocytes |
| Lymphocyte | a subset of nucleated cells found in the blood that are involved in the immune response |
| Leukocyte | a nucleated cell found in white blood cells |
| MHC | (Major histocompatibility complex) responsible for encoding several cell survace proteins important in antigen presentation |
| Phagocyte | one of a group of cells that recognizes, ingests, and degrades pathogens and pathogen products |
