| nostrils, nares | openings through the nose carrying air into the nasal cavities |
| paranasal sinus | one of the air cavities in the bones near the nose |
| cilium | thin hair attached to the mucous membrane epithelium lining the respiratory tract |

| adenoids | lymphatic tissue in the nasopharynx |

| diaphragm | muscle separating the chest and abdomen |

| internal respiration | exchange of gases at the level of the cells within all organs |
| mediastinum | region between the lungs in the chest cavity |
| pulmonary parenchyma | essential parts of the lung, responsible for respiration; bronchioles and alveoli |
| inspiration | breathing in (inhalation) |
| expiration | breathing out (exhalation) |
