| behavioral component | behaviors associated with the motion; include body movements, vocalizations, threat postures, etc |
| autonomic component | activation of the sympathetic branch of the ANS with inverse deactivation of parasympathetic branch; vasodilation, sweating, energy expenditure, etc |
| hormonal component | generally governed by the HPA axis (Hypothalamus-Pituatary-Adrenal); release of Corticotrophins from brain; Release of adrenaline (epinephrine) from adrenal medulla |

| extinction | referred to as a dissociation between the conditioned stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus |
| vmPFC | ventromedial prefrontal cortex; involved in “cognitive control” |
