| Species | Like members of a group that can mate and produce fertile offspring (the babies can have babies, too). |
| Classification | A universal system to communicate the scientific name of every organism. Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species |
| Kingdom | The most general category of classification. There are 5 - plants, animals, fungi, monera, protists |
| Biodiversity | All the different types of life. The greater the differences, the more stable the ecosystem. |
| Dichotomous key | A tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, etc. |
| Environment | The surroundings where an organism lives (both living and non-living parts) |
| Plants | A kingdom of organisms that cannot move, which create their food by photosynthesis |
| Animals | A kingdom of organisms which can move about and must obtain (catch) and ingest (eat) their own food |
| Fungi | A kingdom of organisms like yeast and fungus, which cannot move, cannot do photosynthesis, and which absorb their food from their surroundings. They are often decomposers. |
| Taxonomy | The branch of science dealing with identifying and organizing living things |
| Ecology | The study of livings things and their natural environment |
