| Term | Definition |
| anatomic position | the position of the body when standing straight and facing ahead with each arms handing on either side of the lower body and the palms facing forward |
| prone | the position of the body when a person is lying flat on their front (face down) |
| supine | a person lying on their back (face up) |
| abdominal cavity | the space between the abdonmial wall and spine which contains stomach, intestines, liver, etc |
| anterior | the front of the body |
| posterior | the back of the body |
| vertebral cavity | an area of the body created by the spinal column that holds an important part of the central nervous system |
| superior | toward the head(above) |
| inferior | away from the head(below) |
| abdominopelvic cavity | a cavity in the body made up of the pelvic and abdominal cavities( middle ventral cavity) |
| ventral | front part of the body |
| left hypochondriac | contains the left kidney, left lobe of the liver, & the spleen |
| frontal plane | divides the body into front and back sections (side to side) |
| cranial | relating the skull |
| umbilical | used at the navel |
| caudal | away from the head, end of the body |
| transverse plane | divides the body into upper and lower parts (horizontal plane) |
| pelvic cavity | contains the major organs of the digestive and urinary systems,(bladder, etc) |
| hypogastric | the lower median of the abdomen |
| distal | body parts further away from the center |
| medial | towards the center or middle |
| epigastric | relating the anterior wall of the abdomen |
| dorsal cavity | back of the human body |
| superficial | closer to the surface of the body |
| right lumbar | lower back region if your spinal column |
| thoracic cavity | a space inside your thorax(chest) |
| deep | away from the surface of the body |
| homeostasis | helps the body maintain a stable internal environment |
| right hypochondriac | contains right lobe(liver), right colic angel, etc |
| sagittal plane | divides the body into right and left side |
| dorsal | back portion of the body |
| left iliac | left colon |
| ventral cavity | the front aspect of the human body |
| lateral | to the side of, or the middle of the body |
| midsagittal plane | a vertcial cut down the center line of the specimen that separates the left half from the right half |
| proximal | closer to its origin |
| right iliac | right colon |
| coronal plane | vertical plane running side to side |
| cranial cavity | the space in the skull |
| left lumbar | the lower back region of your backbone |
