| adaptation | the process by which a species becomes better suited for its environment. |

| camouflage | a defense or tactic that organisms use to disguise their appearance to blend in with their surroundings. |
| carnivore | a consumer that eats only meat. |
| competition | a relationship between organisms that strive for the same resources in the same place. |
| consumer | an organism that eats other organisms. |
| deforestation | the act of clearing a wide area of trees. |
| denning | some Florida bears will stay in a den during winter and come out sometimes to eat. |
| dormant | not active but capable of becoming active again. |
| ecosystem | the interaction of all living things in an area with all the non-living things. |
| environment | all the living and non-living parts surrounding an organism. |
| food chain | the order in which organisms depend on each other for food.. |
| herbivore | a consumer that eats only plants. |
| hibernation | a deep sleep some animals do to survive winter. |

| invasive species | any non-native species that disturbs the ecosystems in which it has been introduced. |
| learned behavior | a behavior learned from watching others. |
| migration | moving from one location to another. |
| mimicry | to copy, imitate, or resemble another plant or animal. |
| native | an original or indigenous inhabitant. |
| omnivore | a consumer that eats meat and plants. |
| organism | any living creature. |
| physical characteristic | defining traits of features of an organism. |
| pollution | anything that makes the earth dirty and unhealthy. |
| population | the amount of a type of species living in an area. |
| prey | an animal that is hunted or killed by another animal. |
| predator | an animal that kills and eats other animals. |
| producer | organisms that make their own food for themselves and other organisms. |
