| describe stage 1: Alarm | this is when we know there is stress, and we decide to act on it. to do something about it |
| describe stage 2: Resistance | when we continue to trudge on, dealing with whatever it is we are dealing with, yet start to get sick of it |
| describe stage 3: Exhaustion | this stage is when you are so mentally and physically exhausted that you do not respond well to stress at all. |
| basically Selye is saying that: | your response is much higher at the first signs of stress, yet as the stress drags on it wears you out. (DUH) |
| what is the fight or flight response? | the hypothalamus senses the stress, and sends signals to the pituitary and adrenal glands which increases adrenaline as well as causes rapid breathing and heart rate. |

| what is a stress moderator? | something that either increases or decreases stress |
| 1) Type A | overly competitive, hostile, and constantly in a hurry (increases stress) |
| 2) Hardiness | being Type A is OK, but you must have the three C's |
| what are the three c's? | control, challenge and commitment |
| 3) optimism | being happy and looking towards the bright side will lower your stress levels |
| 4) social support | having someone to talk to will lower your stress |
| 5) sense of humor | laughing will lower your stress |
| 6) relaxation | progressive muscle/imagery tapes... relaxation will give you an escape from all the madness |

| sources of stress (4) | traumatic events, uncontrollability, lack of predictability, and bottling all of your problems inside all cause stress |
| reactions to stress (4) | anxiety, anger agression, apathy and depression, and cognitive impairment |
| what is apathy? | giving up |
| what is cognitive impairment? | when it is hard to concentrate on anything besides that one thing; you are distracted |
| type B | easy-going and relaxed. This type tends to have less stress/deals with stress better. |
