Ch 6 Heredity
Heredity
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Heredity | The passing of genetic traits from parents to offspring |
Blending Inheritance | The mixture of traits from both parents |
Cross-Pollination | Sperm from one plant fertilizes the egg of another plant |
Self-Pollination | Sperm form one plant fertilizes the eggs of the same plant |
Characteristic | A feature that has different forms in a population |
Traits | One of the alternative forms of a gene for a characteristic |
Dominant Trait | A trait that is stronger than another trait and is expressed or seen |
Phenotype | The organism's physical appearance |
Recessive Trait | A trait that is weaker and not expressed or is hidden |
Ratio | A relationship between two numbers that shows comparison |
Genes | A set of instructions for traits |
Alleles | The different forms of a characteristic |
Genotype | The actual genetic makeup or combination of genes an organism has |
Homozygous | If an organism has either two dominant or two recessive genes |
Heterozygous | If an organism has one dominant and one recessive gene |
Punnett Square | A chart used to predict the possible genotypes of a crossing |
Probability | The mathematical chance that something will happen |
Remove the male parts that had the pollen on them, (the anthers) | What did Mendel do to the purple pea plants to be sure that they didn't self pollinate? |
Because the male and female reproductive parts are cover to protect plant from cross pollination. | Why did Mendel use pea plants? |
Homozygous | Is this genotype (BB) homozygous or heterozygous? |
Homozygous | Is this genotype (bb) homozygous or heterozygous? |
heterozygous | Is this genotype (bB) homozygous or heterozygous? |
Phenotype | If someone has blue eyes, is that their genotype or phenotype? |
0% | If you crossed a homozygous Brown eyed mom with a heterozygous Brown eyed dad, what would be the probability of having a blue eyed child? (Use a punnett square) |
2BB:2Bb | If you crossed a homozygous Brown eyed mom with a heterozygous Brown eyed dad, what would be the ration of genotypes? (Use a punnett Square) |
Meiosis | What cell division process produce cells with half the number of chromosomes? |
Ovaries and Testis | In what organs does meiosis take place? |
Eggs and Sperm | Meiosis produce what type of cells? |
All other body cells besides ovaries and testis | Mitosis occurs in which cells? |
