Biology 2-1 Vocabulary

atom the basic unit of matter
nucleus protons+neutons together for the nucleus - which is at the center of the atom (NOT the same as a cell nucleus!)
electron a negatively charged particle
element a pure substance that consists entirely of ONE type of atom
isotope atoms of the SAME element that have a DIFFERENT number of neutrons
compound a substance formed by the combination of two or more elements
ionic bond the chemical bond in which electrons are transferred from one atom to another
ion positively and negatively charged atoms
covalent bond a chemical bond in which electrons are shared between atoms
molecule a molecule is the SMALLEST unit of most compounds
van der Waals forces intermolecular forces of attraction
