Term | Definition |

orthographic words | printed units we see on a page |
tokens | distinguish between the number of words on a page e.g CAT CAT CAT, one word, 3 tokens |
word forms | captures the sense in which related words have different shapes, e.g. cat and cats, have different shapes signified by italicisation |
lexeme | the way in which words are related e.g. goes, going, gone, go signified by small caps |
grammatical word | the particular way a given word form is related to its lexeme e.g. CATS = plural of cat |
morpheme | the units from which words are made contribute meaning to a word new words can be made from combining them may be a root or affix (most roots are free, affixes are always bound to a root) signified by {} |
lexical item | cannot construe its meaning from the meaning of the component morpheme(s), have to be learnt and memorised sometimes 1-1 relationship between lexeme & lexical item - 'cat' to CAT, however CATTY is not a lexical item signified by '____' |
word class | set of words which show the same grammatical behaviour e.g. noun, adjective, verb |
