6th mixtures and sol
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is a mixture? | 2 or more materials stirred together |
What is a property? | a characteristic of an object; something you can observe, such as size, color, shape, or texture |
What is a solution? | a special mixture formed when a material dissolves in water |
What is dissolving? | a process in which one material dispersed uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear |
What is evaporation? | causes liquids to dry up - the liquid turns to gas and disperses into the air, leaving any dissolved solid material behind |
What is a crystal? | the solid form of a material that can be identified by its properties such as shape, color, and pattern |
How do you know when a solution is saturated? | You see the undissolved solid on the bottom. |
Why does the water level rise when the solid dissolves? | Because the mass of the solid is still there with the water. |
What is a solvent? | the liquid material into which the solid material goes |
What is a solute? | the solid material that dissolves |
What is a saturated solution? | when a solute dissolves in a solvent until no more will dissolve |
What is solubility? | the property that substances have of dissolving in solvents |
How can you tell if a clear liquid is a solution? | Let it evaporate. If crystals form, then it was a solution. |
What is concentration? | the amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid |
What is dilute? | to make a solution less concentrated, usually by adding more liquid |
What is volume? | The three dimensional (3D) space occupied by something |
Do saturated solutions have the same concentration? | Yes because the same amount of material is dissolved in both solutions. |
