| pneumonia | an infection in the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens |
| strep throat | bacterial infection of the throat |
| rheumatic fever | an autoimmune disease in the heart that can cause fever, weakness, and damage to heart valves |
| tuberculosis | bacterial infection of the lungs |
| SARS | contagious respiratory illness |
| asthma triggers | substances that cause the airways to tighten, swell, and fill with mucous |
| asthma attack | an episode of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest |
| exercise-induced asthma | EIA; asthma triggered by physical activity |
| animal dander | flakes of dead skin from an animal |
| pollen | yellowish powder produced by flowers, trees, and grass |
| hay fever | seasonal respiratory allergies |
| skin patch test | a skin test that involves putting allergens on a patch, taping the patch to the skin, and observing the reaction |
