Brain Functions
Information Processing
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Thalamus | Relaying sensory information; center for pain perception |
Ventricles | Absorbs physical shock to brain; supplies food & rids waste Filled with cerebrospinal fluid |
Pons | Breathing; movement in face, eyes, & hearing |
Brain Stem | Controls reflexes; regulatory functions including breathing and heartbeat |
Cerebellum | coordination; regulate muscular activity |
Choroid Plexus | Produces cerebrospinal fluid |
Cerebrum | complex neural functions & sensory functions -mostly voluntary |
Pituitary Gland | Controls growth and development & other gland functions |
Medulla Oblongata | Heart / lung control / regulation |
Hypothalamus | coordinates autonomic nervous system and activity in pituitary gland. Controls: body temp., thirst, hunger, and other homeostatic systems. Also sleep and emotions. |
Pineal Gland | secretes hormone-like substance Melatonin that regulates sleep patterns |
Mid Brain | Relay station for audio and visual information |
Corpus Callosum | Nerve fibers that transfer information between hemispheres. |
Amygdala | Involved with emotions, aggression, and memory. Part of the Limbic system. |
Temporal Lobe | episodic (events) memory; Semantic (facts) memory; language |
Parietal Lobe | object/space perception; spelling; calculation; |
Frontal Lobe | Decision making; motivation/inhibition; Language (speech and word selection); Motor control. Two parts: Premotor Cortex & prefrontal area |
Premotor cortex | Storage of motor patterns |
Prefrontal Area | Concentration; Elaboration; judgement; inhibition; personality; emotional traits |
Occipital Lobe | Visual Processing (color, shape, motion, position) |
