Genes | a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring. |
Survival of the fittest | the continued existence of organisms that are best adapted to their environment, with the extinction of others, as a concept in the Darwinian theory of evolution. |
Embryology | the branch of biology and medicine concerned with the study of embryos and their development. |
Fossil | the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock. |
Fossil Record | A term used by paleontologists (see paleontology) to refer to the total number of fossils that have been discovered, as well as to the information derived from them. (See evolution of Earth.) |
Extinct | (of a species, family, or other larger group) having no living members. |
Homologous Structure | A homologous structure is an example of an organ or bone that appears in different animals, underlining anatomical commonalities demonstrating descent from a common ancestor. |
Vestigial Structure | The concept of vestigial applies to genetically determined structures or attributes that have apparently lost most or all of their ancestral function in a given species. |
