Term | Definition |

axis | The imaginary line that passes through Earth's center from the North Pole to the South Pole. Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours. |
rotation | The spinning of Earth on its axis; one rotation of Earth equals one day, Earth rotates from west to east on its axis, making the sun, moon, and stars look as though they are moving from east to west. |
revolution | One complete trip of the Earth around the sun; one revolution equals one year. |
orbit | The Earth's path around the sun; in the shape of an ellipse or flattened circle. |
hemisphere | One half of a sphere; especially of the Earth. |
phases of the moon | The regular changes in the way the moon looks from Earth; caused by changes in the parts of the moon that reflects light from the sun to the Earth. |
eclipse | One object in space casting its shadow on another object in space; examples are eclipse of the moon and eclipse of the sun. |
shadow | A dark shape made by something blocking out light. |
