Chapter 8 Root words and prefixes

TermDefinition
Cyst Bladder
Benign Non life-threatening condition; does not spread
Distal Location farther from the center of the body (hands, feet)
Dorsal Located near, on, or toward the back of the body
Infiltration Slipping into/between normal cells of the body
Lateral Pertaining to the side
Lesion Area of unhealthy tissue
Malignant Abnormal growth that threatens death
Medial Pertaining to the middle, or near the middle, of the body
Metastasis Spread of a disease from its primary site in the body to another location in the body
Neoplasm New, uncontrolled growth of abnormal tissue; a tumor
Papilla Small nipple-shaped projection
Papilloma Benign tumor of skin or mucous membranes. Warts
Papule Small, solid inflammatory elevation of the skin. Does not contain pus
Polyp Growth extending outwards from a mucous membrane. Commonly found in mucous membranes such as the nose.
Proximal Located closer to the point of the attachment to the body (trunk)
Ventral On, or near the belly or side of the body where belly is located
Prefix Ecto-, exo- Outer side
Prefix End-, endo- Inner, within
Prefix Meso- Middle
Prefix Circum- Around
Prefix Peri- Surrounding or around
Prefix Epi- Over, surrounding
Prefix Sub-, Hypo- Below, under
Prefix Supra-, Super- Above, over
Prefix Infra- Below, beneath
