Biopsy | The surgical removal and examination of tissue from the living body. Biopsies generally are performed to determine whether a tumor is benign or malignant. |
Colonoscopy | The visualization of the rectum and the entire colon using a colonoscope. |
Colonscope | An endoscope that is specially designed for passage through the anus to permit visualization of the rectum and the entire length colon. |
Endoscope | An instrument that consists of a tube and an optical system that is used for direct visual inspection of organs or cavities. |
Insufflate | Blow (air, gas, or powder) into a cavity of the body. |
Melena | Dark sticky feces containing partly digested blood. |
Occult blood | Refers to blood in the feces that is not visibly apparent (unlike other types of blood in stool such as melena or hematochezia). A fecal occult blood test (FOBT) checks for hidden (occult) blood in the stool (feces). |
Peroxidase | An enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of a particular substrate by hydrogen peroxide. |
Sigmoidoscope | A test that uses a flexible, narrow tube with a light and tiny camera on one end, called a sigmoidoscope or scope, to look inside the rectum and the lower, or sigmoid, colon. |
Sigmoidoscopy | Examination of the sigmoid colon by means of a flexible tube inserted through the anus. |
