Political Party | Organization of people which seeks to achieve goals common to its member through the acquisition and exercise of political power |
Two-Party System | A system where two major political parties dominate politics within a government. One of the two parties typically holds a majority in the legislature and is usually referred to as the majority party while the other is the minority party |
Third Party | A person or group besides the two primarily involved in a situation |
Platform | The declared policy of a political party or group |
Caucus | A meeting of the members of a legislative body who are members of a particular political party, to select candidates or decide policy |
Political Machine | A political organization in which an authoritative boss or small group commands the support of a corps of supporters and businesses |
Direct Primary | An election in which voters choose candidates to run on a party's ticket in a subsequent election for public office |
Closed Primary | A type of direct primary limited to registered party members, who must declare their party affiliation in order to vote. |
Open Primary | A primary election in which voters are not required to declare party affiliation |
Plurality | The number of votes cast for a candidate who receives more than any other but does not receive an absolute majority |
Majority | the age in which a person is considered a full adult |
Petition | a formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a similar cause |
Polling Place | a building where voting takes place during an election |
Ballot | a process of voting, in writing and typically in secret |
Absentee Ballot | a ballot completed and typically mailed in advance of an election by a voter who is unable to be present at the polls |
Returns | a profit from an investment |
Exit poll | a poll of people leaving a polling place, asking how they voted |
Electorate | all the people in a country or area who are entitled to vote in an election |
Proposition | a statement or assertion that expresses a judgement or opinion |
Referendum | a general vote by the electorate on a single political question that has been referred to them for a direct decision |
Recall | an act or instance of officially recalling someone or something |
Propaganda | information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view |
Political Action Committee | an organization that raises money privately to influence elections or legislation, especially at the federal level |
Soft Money | a contribution to a political party that is not accounted as going to a particular candidate, thus avoiding various legal limitations |
Public opinion | views prevalent among the general public |
Mass media | the media |
Interest group | a natural outgrowth of the communities interests that exist in all societies |
Public opinion poll | represent the opinions of a population by conducting a series of questions |
Pollster | a person who conducts or analyzes opinion polls |
Survey | a general view, examination, or description of someone or something |
Print Media | a medium that disseminates printed matter |
Electronic Media | a way of delivering media through technology |
Public Agenda | nonprofit organization that helps diverse leaders and citizens navigate divisive and complex issues. |
Prior Restraint | censorship imposed, usually by a government, on expression before the expression actually takes place |
Malice | wrongful intention, especially as increasing the guilt of certain offenses |
Regulatory | serving or intended to regulate something |
Nonpartisan | not biased, or partisan, especially toward any particular political group |
Lobbyist | the act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in government |
