Psych Antidepressant

DrugMechClinical UseToxicity
TCA block reuptake of NE and serotonin. Use: Major depression, bedwetting (imipramine), OCD (clomipramine). Se:sedation, alpha blocking effects, atropine-like (anticholinergic) side effects (tachycardia, urinary retention). tertiarys (amitriptyline) have more anticholinergic effects than do secondaries (nortriptyline). Tox: TriCs=Convulsion,Coma, Cardio
Venlafaxine inhibits 5HT, NE, and DA reuptake. antidepressant, generalized anxiety disorder. stimulant effects, sedation, nausea, constipation, elevated BP
Mirtazapine alpha 2 antagonist (increase release of NE and 5HT) and potent 5HT2/3 receptor antagonist. antidepressant sedation, increased appetite, weight gain, dry mouth
Maprotiline blocks NE reuptake. antidepressant sedation, orthostatic hypotension
Trazadone inhibit 5HT reuptake. depression with insomnia sedation, nausea, priapism, postural hypotention
Methylphenidate (ritalin) increase presynaptic NE vesicular release (like amphetamines). ADHD
SSRI depression, OCD. Fewer than TCAs. GI distress, sexual dysfunction (anorgasmia). Serotonin Syndrome with MAOI (hyperthermia, muscle rigidity CV collapse.
Buproprion (Wellbutrin) mech: not well known. antidepressant, smoking cessation. stimulant effects (tachycardia, insomnia), headache, seizure in bulimic patients. does not cause sexual side effects
