---|---|
mechanical energy | The sum of kinetic and potential energy in an object that is used to do work. In other words, it is energy in an object due to its motion or position or both. |
heat energy | The energy that is the internal motion of particles of matter. The faster the particles move, the more of this energy is produced. |
chemical energy | The energy stored in the bonds between atoms. When the bonds are broken, energy is released. Examples include the energy stored in the bonds of fuel or food. |
electromagnetic energy | The energy associated with moving charges. Examples include x-rays, radio waves, light, lasers, and electricity. |
nuclear energy | The energy that exists in the nucleus of an atom. Energy is released when the nucleus splits or is fused with another nucleus. |
energy transfer | The movement or energy from one place to another or one object to another. |
energy conversion | A change in energy from one form to another. |
wave | A traveling disturbance that transmits energy through matter and space. |
electromagnetic waves | Waves that do not require a medium to travel and can be transmitted through a vacuum. Examples include light, microwaves, X-rays, and ultraviolet radiation. |
mechanical waves | Waves that require a medium to travel. Examples include water waves, seismic waves (earthquakes), and sound waves. |
