Biological rhythms | Cycles of biological functions |
Circadian rhythms | The biological cycle of functions that coincide with the 24-hour day |
Melatonin (suprachiasmatic nucleus) | A sleep-inducing hormone |
REM sleep | Rapid eye movement sleep, period of sleep in which vivid dreams occur |
Alpha waves | Slow waves of relaxed awakeness |
Beta waves | Faster waves of awakeness that occur when engaged in cognitive tasks |
Delta waves | Large, slow waves of deep sleep |
Insomnia | Persistent problems in falling or staying asleep |
Narcolepsy | A disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks causing people to lapse directly into REM sleep |
Sleep apnea | Temporary cessations of breathing and repeated momentary awakenings |
Night terrors | Cause high arousal and the appearance of being terrified, occur during Stage 4 sleep |
Manifest content | According to Freud, the remembered storyline of a dream |
Latent content | According to Freud, the underlying meaning of a dream |
Hypnosis | A process in which one person suggests to another that certain perceptions, feelings, thoughts, or behaviors will spontaneously occur |
Posthypnotic suggestion | A suggestion made during a hypnotic session to be carried out after the subject is no longer hypnotized |
