MECHANISM OF ACTION | Adsorbs toxic substances from the GI tract. |
INDICATIONS | Most oral poisonings and medication overdoses; Can be used after evacuation of poisons. |
CONTRAINDICATIONS | Oral administration to comatose patients. After ingestion of corrosives, caustics, or petroleum distillates. Simultaneous administration with other oral drugs. |
ADVERSE REACTIONS | May induce N/V. May cause constipation and black stools. |
NOTES ON ADMINISTRATION | Often used in conjunction with magnesium citrate. Will not adsorb cyanide, lithium, iron, lead, or arsenic. |
INCOMPATABILITIES/DRUG INTERACTIONS | Bonds with and generally inactivates anything it is administered with. |
DOSE/ROUTE Adult | 1-2g/kg PO or NGT. |
