CLASS Isotonic crystalloid
MECHANISM OF ACTION Normal saline replaces water and electrolytes
INDICATIONS Heat-related problems (heat exhaustion, heat stroke), Fresh water drowning, hypovolemia, Diabetic ketoacidosis, Keep open IV.
CONTRAINDICATIONS The use of 0.9% sodium chloride should not be considered in patients with congestive heart failure as circulatory overload can be easily induced.
ADVERSE REACTIONS Rare in therapeutic dosages
NOTES ON ADMINISTRATION None
INCOMPATABILITIES/DRUG INTERACTIONS Few in the emergency setting.
DOSE/ROUTE In severe heat stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis, and fresh water drowning, it is likely that you will be called upon to administer the fluid quite rapidly. In other cases it is advisable to administer the fluid at moderate rate ( for example, 100ml/h)
