Plate Tectonics

TermDefinition
Plate Tectonics geological theory that states the pieces of Earth's lithosphere are in constant slow motion
Inner Core dense ball of solid metal inside Earth
Outer Core layer of molten metal that surrounds the inner core
Mantle a layer of hot rock
Crust layer of rock that forms the Earth's outer skin
Pangea supercontinent mean "all lands"
Alfred Wegener his theory was all continents where all one land mass and then drifted apart- many did not accept it
Continental Drift continents slowly moved over Earth's surface
Radiation the transfer or energy through empty space
Conduction heat transfer by direct contact
Seafloor Spreading The process by which molten material adds new oceanic crust to the ocean floor
Mid-ocean ridge The undersea mountains chain where new ocean floor is produced
Convergent boundary The place where 2 plates have come together
Divergent boundary The place where 2 plates move apart
Transform boundary The place where 2 plated have slipped past one another
Lithosphere A rigid layer made of the uppermost part of the mantle and crust
Asthenosphere The soft layer of the mantle on which the lithosphere floats
Subduction process by which the ocean floor sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench
Fault breaks in the earth's crust that have slipped past each other
Rift Valley deep valley that forms along a divergent boundary
Convection heat transfer by movement of heated fluids

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
