Sensation and Perception
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Gestalt | the organized whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Perception is holistic. |
| Basic Law of perception | people perceive what the expect to perceive. |
| Perception | pain is increased by attending to it. |
| Illusions and Hallucinations | Illusions: shared misperceptions by most people in the same situation Hallucinations: non-shared perceptual distortions. misperception is not the same as misconception |
| Somesthetic (body) senses | Skin senses (touch, pressure, pain, temperature) Kinesthetic sense (location of body parts) Vestibular sense (balance) |
| 5 basic tastes | salty, sour, bitter, sweet, umami |
| Chemical senses | smell (olfaction) and taste (gustation) work together. molecules attach to the sensory receptors |
| Hearing (audition) | tiny hair-like cilia are the sensory receptors for hearing and are located in the shell-shaped cochlea. Hearing can be impaired at the nerves or the bones. |
| Photoreceptors | The retina contains two kinds of photoreceptors; rods(black and white) and cones(color). The axons form a bundle called the optic nerve and cross before reaching the occipital lobe. (Optic nerve causes blind spot) |
| Transduction | The conversion of energy from one form to another. |
| Sensory adaptation and habituation | Sensory adaptation: occurs in sensory receptor cells by becoming less responsive to unchanging stimuli. Habituation: occurs in brain by filtering out information. |
| Absolute thresholds | The smallest amount of energy required to be detected 50% of the time |
| Psychophysics | Study of the relationship between sensation and perception. (Term from Gustav Fechner) |
| Sensation and perception | sensation: the process of receiving information from the environment perception: the process of organizing and interpreting information |
| Vestibular sense | The semicircular canals in the inner ear gives us a sense of our orientation to gravity. |
