Selective attention | The focusing of conscious awareness on a particular stimulus, as in a particular stimulus. |
Gestalt rules | An organized whole. |
Figure-ground relationship | The organization of the visual field into the objects (the figures) that stand out from their surroundings (the ground). |
Proximity | Grouping nearby figures together. |
Similarity | Grouping together figures that are similar to each other. |
Continuity | Perceiving smooth, continuous patterns rather than discontinuous ones. |
Constancy | Perceiving something as uniform and linked. |
Depth perception | The ability to see objects in three dimensions although the images strike the retina are two dimensional, allows us to judge distance. |
Monocular cues | Depth cues, such as interposition and linear prospective, available to either eye alone. |
Phi phenomenon | An illusion of movement created when two or more adjacent lights blink on and off in quick succession. |
Perceptual constancy | Perceiving objects as exchanging (having constant lightness, color, shape, and sight) even as illumination and retina images change. |
Lightness constancy | Perceiving an object as having a constant lightness even while its illumination varies. |
Perceptual adaptation | In vision, the ability to adjust to an artificially displaced or even inverted visual field. |
Perceptual set | A mental predisposition to perceive one thing and not another. |
Weber's law | The change in a stimulus will be just noticeable is a constant ratio of the original stimulus. |
Parasyextrasensory perception (ESP) | The controversial claim that perception can occur apart from sensory input. |
Psychokinesis | Mind over matter. |
