SOLAR SYSTEM / CYCLES & PATTERNS IN SPACE (Chapter 1 & 2)
Term | Definition |
---|---|
axis | an imaginary line through the center of an object |
constellation | a group of stars that forms a pattern shaped like an animal, person, or object |
Crescent Moon | the phase of the Moon when a thin part of the Moon's near side is sunlit |
equator | an imaginary line that circles the Earth halfway between the North and South Poles |
Full Moon | the phase of the Moon when all of the Moon's near side is sunlit |
New Moon | the phase of the Moon when the Moon's near side appears totally dark |
phases of the Moon | the different ways the Moon looks throughout the month |
Quarter Moon | the phase of the Moon when half of the Moon's near side is sunlit |
rotate/spin | to turn on an axis or move about a fixed point |
season | one of four parts of the year - spring, summer, fall, and winter. (changes due to Earth's revolution around the Sun) |
star | a ball of hot gases that gives off light and other forms of energy |
Waning Moon | the phases of the Moon when a decreasing around of the Moon's near side sunlight |
Waxing Moon | the phases of the Moon when an increasing amount of the Moon's near side is sunlight |
gas giant | a very large planet made up mostly of gases |
inner planets | smalles planets in our solar system, they are closest to the Sun and include Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars -- made of rock |
magnify | to make an object appear larger |
moon | a small, rounded body in orbit around a planet |
orbit/revolve | to move in a path around something |
outer planets | largest planets in our solar system, they are farthest away from the Sun and include Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune -- made of gas (Gas Giants) and they ALL have rings |
planet | a large body of rock or gas that orbits around a star |
solar system | the Sun and planets, their moons, and other objects that orbit the Sun |
space probe | craft that travels into space with instruments, but not people -- they carry cameras, lab equipments, and other tools to take pictures and collect data of space |
Sun | nearest star to Earth |
telescope | a tool used that makes distant objects appear larger, brighter and sharper |
