lever | a strong bar that is used to lift and move something heavy |
pulley | a wheel or set of wheels that is used with a rope, chain, etc., to lift or lower heavy objects |
inclined plane | a sloping ramp |
wheel and axle | a simple lifting machine |
wedge | a piece of wood, metal, etc., with one pointed end and one thicker end that is used to split something |
simple machine | any of the basic mechanical devices for applying a force, such as an inclined plane, wedge, or lever. |
subsystem | a self-contained system within a larger system |
Newtons | the standard unit of force in the International System of Units |
engineering | the work of designing and creating structures |
spring scale | a weighing scale with a spring on one end and a hook attached to an object at the other |
load | something that is lifted and carried |
mixture | something made by combining two or more ingredients |
force | physical strength, power, or effect |
motion | an act or process of moving |
energy | ability to be active |
work | to use and control |
system | a group of related parts that move or work together |
mass | a usually large amount of a substance that has no particular shape |
push | to use force to move something forward or away from you |
pull | to hold onto and move something in a particular direction and especially toward yourself |
properties | a special quality or characteristic of something |
processes | a series of actions that produce something or that lead to a particular result |
matter | the thing that forms physical objects and occupies space |
magnetism | the property of attracting certain metals |
solid | firm or hard |
liquid | a substance that is able to flow freely |
gas | a substance that is like air and has no fixed shape |
