Science Foundations

The basic words to discuss science investigations and experiments.

TermDefinition
Science The knowledge obtained by observing natural events and conditions in order to discover facts and formulate laws that can be tested.
Observation The process of obtaining information by using the senses of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and sometimes taste.
Scientific Method A series of steps followed to solve a problem.
Hypothesis An explanation that is based on prior scientific research or observations and that can be tested.
Data Any information received through observations or experimentation.
Model A pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept.
Meter The basic unit of length in the SI. (Metric system)
Area A measure of the size of a surface or a region.
Mass A measure of the amount of matter in an object.
Volume A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space.
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is.
Variable Any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types.
Control or Constant A variable that cannot be changed or is purposely not changed during the experiment.
Independent Variable The independent variable is the one that is changed by the scientist.
Dependent Variable The dependent variables are the things that the scientist focuses his or her observations on to see how they respond to the change made to the independent variable.
