Term | Definition |

Habitat | the place where an organism usually lives |
biome | a large region made up of similar ecosystems |
Community | all the populations in a shared living space |
biotic | the living things in an ecosystem, such as insects, animals and plants |
abiotic | the non-living things in an ecosystem, such as water, soil and sunlight |
Species | a group of closely related organisms that can produce offspring |
predator | an organism that hunts for food |
prey | an animal that is hunted and eaten for food |
omnivore | an organism that eats plants and meat |
carnivore | an organism that eats only meat |
herbivore | an organism that eats only plants |
food chain | a chart that shows energy transfer between a producer & consumers |
producer | an organism like a plant that makes its own energy |
consumer | a living thing that cannot make its own food |
primary consumer | an organism that only eats plants |
competition | the struggle among living things for resources |
decomposer | an organism that gets energy by breaking down the remains of other organisms. |
