What are the definitions of abnormality? | Statistical infrequency, deviation from social norms, ideal mental health, failure to function |
Define abnormality | Behaviour that deviates from the social norm and is dysfunctional to the point where it can cause harm |
Define statistical infrequency | Behaviour thatâs statistically rare and falls into the less than 5 percentile of a normal distribution curve, plus or minus 2 standard deviations E.g IQ |
Define deviation from social norms | Behaviour that is socially unacceptable or not accepted in society, goes against the unwritten and unspoken rules of society, desirable and undesirable traits in society |

Describe Broca and Tan | |
Broca was a psychologist that studied a man named Tan who had a speech impediment (he could only say the word Tan). Broca then studied his brain and found a lesion in his speech area now called Brocaâs area. | |
Explain the difference between EEG and ERP | |
ERP- method of studying the brains activity by placing electrodes on the scalp then subjecting the P to a stimulus multiple times in order to be able to get an average score (averaging). EEG - same as ERP except itâs without being subjected to a stimul | |
What are the 3 parts of the personality? | Id, Ego and Superego |
What is the first assumption of the psychodynamic approach? | There are 3 parts of the personality, the Id, Ego and Superego. Thereâs often unconscious conflict between the Id and the Superego that the Ego tries to balance. |
What is the second assumption of the psychodynamic approach? | The mind is structured like an iceberg. |
Describe the structure of the iceberg | The tip is the conscious thoughts containing thoughts and perceptions, the middle is the unconscious containing fears, traumatic memories, conflicts and the Idâs desires and the base under water is the preconscious, holding the memories and knowledge |
