TermDefinition
Solution a liquid homogeneous mixture in which the solute is distributed evenly within the solute.
Pure Substance Atoms of various elements (same or different) that combine with one another to become the smallest unit of a chemical compound
Homogeneous mixture A solid, liquid, or gas mixture that has its different components mixed evenly within the substance
Heterogeneous mixture A solid, liquid, or gas mixture that has its different components mixed unevenly within a substance
Emulsion A homogenous mixture of 2 or more liquids that are normally not mixable
Colloid A homogeneous mixture in which microscopically insoluble particles are suspended throughout another substance.
Salt Chemical compound that forms from the reactions of an acid or base.
pH A value from 0 to 14 that is used to specify how acidic or basic a compound is when dissolved in water.
Family A group of elements with similar properties, which falls into columns on the periodic table
Metalloids Elements whose properties are between those of metals and solid nonmetals.
Chemical bond An attraction between atoms as they react to form compounds.
Chemical formula A formula giving the number of atoms of the elements present in one molecule of a compound.
Compound Matter that is composed of 2 or more elements.
Substance Matter, either element or compound that has a specific compound, that has a specific compound and specific properties.
Acid A compound that increases hydrogen ions when it is dissolved in a solution.
Base A compound that increases the hydroxide ions when it is dissolved in an solution.
Ion An atom or molecule with a positive or negative charge.
Atomic mass The mass of an atom or its sub-atomic particles expressed in atomic mass units (amu) . Protons +Neutrons= atomic mass
Electrons A negatively charged particle that orbits the nucleus of an atom
Electron Cloud The region around the nucleus of an atom . It is mostly empty space where electrons orbit.
Neutrons A neutral (no charge) particle that is in the nucleus of an atom
Nucleus The dense core or center of the atom that contains the protons and neutrons
Protons A positively changed particle that is in the nucleus of an atom
Subatomic particles Particles within an atom
Atomic radius The distance form an atom's nucleus to the outermost orbital of electrons

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
