EDUC 203 Module 2
Neurological Development and Learning
Term | Definition |
---|---|
brain architecture | The structures and functions of the brain, including the neural connections |
serve-and-return | Gestures and sounds mirrored and responded to between adults and children, particularly infants and toddlers. |
toxic stress | Excessive or prolonged stress resulting in physical, emotional, and cognitive damage, through the repeated engagement of the stress response (fight or flight system) |
ACEs | Adverse Childhood Experiences which may result in damage to the parts of the brain which aid in stress regulation, emotions, cognition, memory, and self-control. Evidence also suggests that ACEs impact physical health well into adulthood. |
neural connections | The connections between neurons in the brain where chemical and electrical impulses constitute the reception, storage, and transmission of information |
neural pruning | The tendency of neural synaptic connections to die away when unused or inefficient. |
neuroplasticity | The brain’s ability to re-form itself either through experience and learning or through healing after trauma or disease. |
human development | A process of growth or maturation that follows a generally normative course for most humans. |
learning | knowledge gained through attention, sensory input, experience, and/or study |
neural blooming | A period of rapid neural synaptic growth occurring mainly in the first three years of life. |
