span | (of a bridge, arch, etc.) extend from side to side of. |
compression | the action of compressing or being compressed. |
suspension bridge | a type of bridge in which the deck (the load-bearing portion) is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders. The first modern examples of this type of bridge were built in the early 1800s. |
dissipate | (with reference to a feeling or other intangible thing) disappear or cause to disappear. |
buckle | a flat, typically rectangular frame with a hinged pin, used for joining the ends of a belt or strap. |
tension | the state of being stretched tight. |
stable | (of an object or structure) not likely to give way or overturn; firmly fixed. |
torsion | the action of twisting or the state of being twisted, especially of one end of an object relative to the other. |
pier | a platform supported on pillars or girders leading out from the shore into a body of water, used as a landing stage for boats. |
cuntileuer | a long projecting beam or girder fixed at only one end, used in bridge construction. |
buckling | bend and give way under pressure or strain. |
cable | a thick rope of wire or nonmetallic fiber, typically used for construction, mooring ships, and towing vehicles. |
rigid | unable to bend or be forced out of shape; not flexible. |
abutment | a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span, e.g. at the ends of a bridge. |
beam bridge | also known as stringer bridges, are the simplest structural forms for bridge spans supported by an abutment or pier at each end. No moments are transferred throughout the support, hence their structural type is known as simply supported. |
snapping | the action of breaking suddenly and completely, typically with a sharp cracking sound. |
joint | a point at which parts of an artificial structure are joined. |
transfer | move from one place to another. |
truss | a framework, typically consisting of rafters, posts, and struts, supporting a roof, bridge, or other structure. |
arch bridge | bridge with abutments at each end shaped as a curved arch. Arch bridges work by transferring the weight of the bridge and its loads partially into a horizontal thrust restrained by the abutments at either side. |
force | is an exertion of pressure either focused toward or pulling away from an object, and is applied either by another object or something such as gravity or magnetism. |
