Matter

definitions for matter 3rd grade science

TermDefinition
Matter A physical substance that takes up space and has mass as a form of energy.
Chemical change A chemical reaction that involves the rearranging of atoms; a substance combining with another substance to create a new substance.
Physical change A change in which the form of matter is altered but one substance is not changed into another.
Volume The amount of space that a substance or an object takes up.
Mass The amount of matter that an object contains.
Water vapor The gaseous state of water produced by evaporation at tempuratures below boiling point.
Atom The basic unit of a chemical element; a source of nuclear energy.
Particle A small fragment or quantity of matter.
Element A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by a chemical reaction.
Gas A sample of matter that becomes the shape of the container it is in and has the same density no matter the size.
Physical property A characteristic of matter that may be observed and measured without changing the chemical identity of a sample.
Chemical property A characteristic or behavior of a substance that may be observed when it undergoes a chemical change or reaction.
Molecules A group of two or more atoms linked together by sharing electrons in a chemical bond.
Magnetic A physical phenomenon produced by the motion of electric charge.
Mixture The result of combing two or more substances.
