Passive Transport
Passive transport and the Cell Membrane Structure
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Phospholipid | Type of lipid that makes up the structure of the cell membrane |
Hydrophobic | Water fearing fatty acid tails |
Hydrophilic | Water loving phosphate heads |
Fluid Mosaic Model | Description of the cell membrane because it acts like a fluid and is very flexible |
Properties of Passive Transport | (1) requires no energy (2) moves from high to low concentration gradient |
Concentration Gradient | An unequal build up of molecules on one side of the cell membrane |
Diffusion | Movement of particles from high to low concentration; no energy is required (EX: oxygen, water, carbon dioxide) |
Osmosis | Movement of water from high to low concentration; no energy is required |
Facilitated Diffusion | Movement of very large particles from high to low concentration; no energy is required and the particles move through a protein channel (EX: glucose) |
Solute | Stuff being dissolved (EX: salt, sugar) |
Solvent | Stuff doing the dissolving (EX: Water) |
