4th Grade Matter
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Anything that has mass and takes up space | Matter |
The amount of material that an object has in it | Mass |
The amount of space that matter takes up | Volume |
Something about matter that can be observed and tells you what matter is like | Property |
These properties can be used to describe and sort matter | Physical Properties of Matter |
What are examples of physical properties? | Color, shape, size, mass |
An important property of matter is its state. What are the 3 states of matter? | 1. solid; 2. liquid; 3. gas |
What are the properties of a solid? | has a definite shape and volume; particles are very close together; particles don't move, but vibrate where they are |
What are the properties of a liquid? | has a definite volume, but does NOT have a definite shape; particles move slower than the particles in a gas; particles slide past each other; takes the shape of its container |
What are the properties of a gas? | does NOT have a definite shape or volume; particles move very fast and are far away from each other; takes the shape and volume of its container; free to move about the container/area |
Two or more substances that are mixed together, but can easily be separated | Mixture |
What is an example of a mixture? | Salad |
A mixture in which one substance spreads evenly throughout another substance | Solution |
What is an example of a Soultion? | Salt and water |
Length is a property of matter that can be measured. What does length measure? | The distance between one point and another |
What are some customary units for measuring length? | Inches, feet, yards, miles |
What is the metric unit for measuring length? | Meter |
Volume is a property of matter that can be measured. Volume = ? | volume = length x width x height |
What is the unit for measuring volume? | cubic meter |
What is a unit for measuring the volume of liquids? | liter |
What is a graduated cylinder? When is it used? | Graduated cylinders are used to measure the volume of liquids. It is marked with lines that are equal distances apart |
Mass is a property of matter that can be measured. What do scientists use to measure mass? | Balance |
What is the basic unit for measuring mass? | Gram |
A property of matter that can be measured. It is how much mass is in a certain volume of matter. | Density |
Something with greater density will ? | Sink |
Something with less density will ? | Float |
