renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy

nonrenewable (nr) | a resource that forms at a much slower rate than the rate at which it is consumed |
renewable (r) | a natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which it is consumed |
fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) | formed from dead and decaying marine organisms that are exposed to heat under pressure over millions of years, nonrenewable |
biomass | organic (once living) matter used as fuel to produce heat and/or electricity, renewable |
tidal | motion of incoming ocean tides used by underwater turbines to produce electricity, renewable |
wind | motion of moving air used to generate electricity in turbines, renewable |
hydroelectric | motion of falling water used to generate electricity, renewable |
solar | produced by the sun, used for heating and electricity, renewable |
nuclear | energy released as heat from fission of Uranium nuclei, used to make electricity, nonrenewable |
geothermal | thermal energy generated and stored in the earth, used to provide heat or generate electricity, renewable |
