Module 12: Make Deposits In Other People's Emotional Bank Accounts (EBA) | Main Point: The key to making friends is to deposit acts of kindness and helpfulness in their Emotional Bank Accounts (and to avoid making withdrawals). |
1) Find Out What a Deposit Is for the Other Person | Ask the person what kind of emotional deposit they would like and appreciate. Not everyone is the same, you want to ask before you assume. |
2) Do Small Acts of Kindness | Treating people with kindness is a type of emotional deposit. The opposite, (a withdrawal), would be acting unkind, discourteous, or disrespectful. |
3) Keep Promises | Keeping a promise is essential to maintaining a good EBA with anyone. Don't agree or make a promise you know you can't keep. |
4) Keep Confidences | When someone tells you something discreetly, do not share that information without permission. Be mindful of this kind of behavior especially when it comes to the internet and social media. |
5) Be Loyal to the Absent | Avoid gossiping and badmouthing other people. Stick up for people if you hear someone speaking ill of them. |
6) Set Clear Expectations | Don't leave matters undecided. Make a decision and stick to your decision. |
7) Apologize. | Admit when you are wrong. Instead of being manipulative or ignorant, admit when you're wrong and apologize. |
8) Forgive. | Instead of holding on to negative emotions about a person or situation, forgive and move on. Dwelling or holding a grudge only effects you and hinders your happiness and growth. |
