1.1 Know about the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system
Term | Definition |
---|---|
musculoskeletal system | The body system made up of the skeleton, muscles, and the connective tissues that bind them together (ligaments, tendons and cartilage). |
skeleton | The body’s internal structural framework, composed of separate but connected bones. |
bones | The connected parts of the skeleton. They are lightweight but strong and rigid, and vary greatly in terms of size and shape. |
structural support | One of the functions of the skeleton is s..... s..... for the body. |
protection | One of the functions of the skeleton is p..... of vital organs. |
muscle attachment | One of the functions of the skeleton is m..... a..... for movement. |
ligaments | The connective tissues that bind together the bones of the skeleton at its joints. |
cartilage | The connective tissue that protects bones from wear and tear at joint sites (among other functions in the body) |
tendons | The connective tissues that attach muscles to bones. |
muscles | Bundles of fibrous tissue that produce movement in the body by contracting and relaxing. |
muscle fibres | Long, cylindrical cells which are grouped together in bundles of hundreds or thousands in a single muscle., and contract or relax together to move the muscle. |
contraction | Shortening of muscle fibres which takes place in response to chemical and electrical messages sent by the body’s nervous system. |
antagonistic muscle pairs | A pair of muscles that operate together to produce certain types of reversible movement. When one muscle in the pair contracts, the other relaxes. |
triceps | The muscle that forms an antagonistic muscle pair with the biceps. |
hamstrings | The muscle that forms an antagonistic muscle pair with the quadriceps. |
trapezius | The muscle that forms an antagonistic muscle pair with the pectoral muscle. |
biceps | The muscle that forms an antagonistic muscle pair with the triceps. |
quadriceps | The muscle that forms an antagonistic muscle pair with the hamstrings. |
pectoral muscle | The muscle that forms an antagonistic muscle pair with the trapezius. |
