Term | Definition |
---|---|
Macronutrients | Used in large quantities by plants |
Micronutrients | Used in small quantities by plants |
Lodging | cereal crops bending over so lie almost flat on the ground. Difficult to harvest and reduces yield |
Soil testing | Allows farmers to determine the nutrients available on their land |
Fertiliser | an inorganic, manufactured material that may contain one or more of the essential elements required for crop growth |
Manure | an organic material that consists of the wastes of plants and animals |
Straight (simple) fertiliser | Contains only one of the essential elements |
Compound fertiliser | Any fertiliser that contains two or more elements. |
Volatilisation | A process in which the ammonium ions produced are converted to ammonia gas, which is then lost to the atmosphere |
Anaerobic | Describes respiration in absence of oxygen |
Agitation | Rapid stirring of liquid |
Poaching | Damage caused to wet or waterlogged land where land is cut up by livestock movement on wet soils. It causes surface vegetation to be removed and soil to be washed away. Soil may also be compacted. |
Outfall | the point where a drain empties into a river, lake or sea |
Mole plough | creates cylindrical channels in the soil which increase the drainage ability of a soil with low permeability. |
Eutrophication | the artificial enrichment of a habitat or environment with nutrients |
Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) | The amount of dissolved oxygen needed to break down organic material in a water sample |
Effluent | discharge of liquid waste from a substance or run-off from land |
Buffer Zone | land beside a waterway that controls and prevents pollution of the waterway. Helps maintain water quality |
