Energy
7.PS.3
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Chemical Energy | A form of potential energy that is stored in chemical bonds between atoms and molecules |
Closed System | a system in which matter and energy exchanges do not occur across boundaries |
Dissipated Energy | energy used up in a system, typically lost due to work done by friction, 'wasted energy' |
Electrical Energy | Energy caused by the movement of electrons |
Energy | The ability to do work or cause change |
Ethanol Fuel | a biofuel alternative to gasoline, usually derived from corn |
Fossil Fuels | Coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals. |
Geothermal Energy | Energy from steam or hot water produced from hot or molten underground rocks |
Gravitational Energy | Potential energy that depends on the height of an object |
Hydroelectric Power | Power generated from moving water |
Kinetic Energy | the energy an object has due to its motion |
The Law of Conservation of Energy | The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another |
Mechanical Energy | Kinetic or potential energy associated with the motion or position of an object |
Nuclear Energy | The potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
Open System | a system in which exchanges of matter or energy occur across system boundaries |
Potential Energy (PE) | the energy stored in an object because of its position or composition |
Radiant Energy-Light | Energy that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves, often from an object like the sun or a light bulb |
Sound Energy | Energy caused by an objects vibrations of particles |
Thermal Energy | The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance |
Transfer | to move from one place to another |
Transform | to change in form or appearance |
Turbine | A device with blades that can be turned by water, wind, steam, or exhaust gas from combustion that turns a generator in an electricity-producing plant |
